What goes inside a wall and what never does

Only parts rated for in-wall use go inside a wall. A standard power cord or an extension lead never does.

In-wall rated power kit Standard power cord
CL3-rated HDMI Extension lead or power strip
Low-voltage signal cable A plug-in cord bundled with others

How a rated kit is fitted

A kit has two recessed boxes joined by rated cable: an upper one behind the TV with a receptacle, and a lower one near the floor that takes power from a short cord to an existing outlet. HDMI passes through a brush-covered opening in the same bay, and the whole run stays between two studs.

How an in-wall power kit works. An in-wall power kit carries power inside the wall through rated cable between two recessed boxes; an extension cord never runs inside a wall.

What the numbers show

  1. Upper recessed box A recessed box behind the TV holds the receptacle the TV plugs into.
  2. In-wall rated cable Rated cable runs between the boxes inside the stud bay.
  3. Lower inlet box A recessed box near the floor takes power from a short cord to an existing outlet.
  4. Signal pass-through A brush-covered opening lets HDMI cables pass through the same bay.
  5. Stud bay The bay between two studs is the protected route for the cable.

Fire blocking, shared walls and metal studs

Many walls have a horizontal fire block inside the stud bay that stops the cable run, which can be cut around only where allowed. A shared wall in a townhome or condo is avoided, and metal studs call for grommeted openings. Where the wall cannot be opened, a paintable raceway is the alternative.

  • Fire block in the bay: the route is changed or a raceway is used.
  • Shared wall: an interior partition is the usual choice.
  • Metal studs: protected openings are required.

In-Wall Wire Concealment — common questions

Can a TV power cord go inside the wall?

No; only in-wall rated kits go inside, and a plain cord never does.

Does hiding the wires need a permit?

A kit that plugs into an existing outlet adds no new circuit, but a new outlet or circuit is electrical work that is permitted and inspected, and it is an electrician's job.
